HOW TO GROW MICROGREENS IN TRAYS

This guide is for growing microgreens in our 1010 or 1020 grow trays!

These trays are made especially for growing these tiny greens. They are shallow so you don't waste any unnecessary soil and encourage fast growing greens.

Equipment:

  • Trays with and without holes 1010 or 1020

     (one tray set = 1 x with & 2 x without)

  • Grow medium (coco coir/peat is best)

  • Soil scoop

  • Seeds (microgreen specific seeds work best for high germination rates)

  • Fine mist spray bottle

  • Approx 5kg weight like a brick or paver

STEP 1 - Seeding Process

  • Place a tray with holes inside of tray without holes. Place a full scoop of nicely saturated grow medium into top tray (with holes) and spread evenly. Once evenly spread, flatten grow medium by placing another tray on top and press firmly.

  • Evenly spread seeds across grow medium, aiming for full coverage without having seeds onto of each other. Lightly spritz seeds using a fine mist spray bottle.

- If seeding multiple trays, once one tray set is seeded, repeat step 1 and stack seeded trays on top of each other.

STEP 2 - Weighted Germination

  • Place a tray without holes on top of your seeded tray/s and evenly distribute your 5kg (approx) weight on the top tray. Leave for 2-3 days. After this time your seeds will have germinated and you will see they have sprouted.

STEP 3 - Blackout

  • Once your seeds have germinated, seperate each tray set and place a tray without holes upside down to create a ‘blackout’ dome over your seeded tray (be sure that no light can reach the germinated seeds). Leave for 2-3 days. After this time your microgreens will have grown significantly without water or light and will look yellow and almost dead (but they are not!!). Now they are ready to go under lights 24/7.

STEP 4 - GROW!

  • Place your microgreens under LED Grow lights 24/7.

  • It is important to regulate the humidity and temperature of the room while your microgreens are growing under the lights. Keeping a constant temperature between 21-24 degrees celsius and humidity of 60-70%. This is monitored by the use of a hygrometer and controlled with a humidifier and fan.

  • Bottom water your microgreens daily, to do this lift the seeded tray and pour the water into the ‘without holes’ tray beneath.

  • Depending on the microgreens you have chosen, the harvest time will differ, usually this will be somewhere between 4-7 days under lights.

  • Harvest your microgreens at tray height, rinse, pat dry and store in a container in the fridge for longevity.

Now it’s time to enjoy the fruits of your labour!
